SUMMARY:Marsh Creek Community Bioblitz
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity for connection and collaboration with all those who care about nature! \n\n\n\n\nJoin us Friday September 25 and Saturday September 26 for two days of nature-packed activities as we discover Marsh Creek’s wild side as part of the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Great Canadian Bioblitz. Organized by Prince Edward County Field Naturalists (PECFN) and Feral Folc in partnership with the South Shore Joint Initiative\, Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory\, Friends of Delhi Park\, VTLA Studio and Trees for PEC. \nA ‘bioblitz’ is a 24-hour event that invites residents\, visitors\, naturalists and nature lovers of all ages and experience levels to work collectively as community scientists to observe and document the remarkable biodiversity of a specific place using the iNaturalist app. \nAnyone can participate and all observations documented will contribute to a better understanding of overall ecosystem health while supporting one of Canada’s largest community science initiatives. This collaboration and recording of local plants\, animals\, insects\, fungi and more is intended to build local knowledge\, strengthen relationships and lay the groundwork for ongoing community stewardship and ecological monitoring along Marsh Creek. \nThe Bioblitz is FREE to attend and will offer iNaturalist training\, informative learning materials about local wildlife\, drop-in exploration and activities for all ages\, as well as scheduled walks\, workshops and conversations on specific themes and species. No previous experience necessary\, just curiosity and a willingness to slow down and look a little closer. \nThe Marsh Creek and Delhi Park Community Bioblitz iNaturalist project study area follows Marsh Creek from Glenwood Cemetery\, through Delhi Park to Picton Bay. Already\, the iNat project has 84 observers who have contributed 381 observations representing 191 species. This beloved green space in the heart of Picton is home to wetlands\, a creek\, meadow and mature tree canopy\, all providing essential habitat and an ecological corridor for wildlife. \nRegistering for the Bioblitz helps us anticipate attendees and allows us to update you on potential weather cancellations as well as sharing the final report. It’s recommended but not required.

SUMMARY:Learn To Can (a class for parent/caregiver and child)
DESCRIPTION:This class is a family affair! It is designed for “Bigs” (any parent\, guardian or caregiver) and their “Little” to enjoy an engaging experience in the kitchen. \nIn this hands-on class\, you’ll work as a team to make two delicious preserves: homemade applesauce and classic dill pickles. You’ll learn the basics of safe canning\, how to prepare your jars and ingredients\, and how to preserve the flavours of the season to enjoy later. \nAt the end of the morning\, each Big & Little pair will head home with:\n• 1 x 500 ml (1 pint) jar of applesauce\n• 1 x 1 L (1 quart) jar of dill pickles \nWhere: County Food Hub Kitchen \nWhen: Saturday\, September 26 – 9:00 a.m. start \nCost: $25 per pair of Big & Little (two people) to cover the cost of material \nHow Long: Approximately 2.5–3 hours \nCome learn a useful skill\, make something delicious\, and spend some time together in the kitchen! \nAge Limit: There is no age limit for Littles\, but please keep in mind that we’ll be working in a commercial kitchen with work tables approximately 35 inches (89 cm) high\, which is taller than a typical household table. For safety reasons\, step stools are not permitted. We recommend this class for school-aged children and up\, and Littles should be comfortable working at this height with the support of their Big. \nMeet Your Instructor: Joan\nJoan has spent decades growing\, preserving\, foraging and making the most of the food around her. From canning and jarring to dehydrating\, processing and preserving\, she has built a wealth of hands-on knowledge that she is excited to share. \nJoan believes these skills are meant to be shared. Her hope is simple: that you’ll learn something new\, enjoy making food together\, and take these skills home to use and pass on to the next generation.
